Florida Health Insurance Options
There are four primary types of insurance coverage available. Each has strengths and weaknesses, of course, and it’s up to you to decide which type of health insurance will best meet your needs.
Florida Traditional Health Insurance
Traditional health insurance, often called Fee-for-Service, works a lot like auto insurance: you pay your deductible each year usually starting each calendar year and then the health insurance company covers the majority of the additional charges. Florida Fee-for-Service plans tend to have higher out-of-pocket expenses for the consumer, but they also offer the greatest freedom: for example, you can usually see a health care specialist without needing a referral from a primary care physician.
Florida Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Health Insurance
A Preferred Provider Organization, often referred to as a PPO, allows the subscriber to see health care providers within an established network. There is a financial incentive for seeing providers who are a part of the network, as the co-pays are usually significantly lower, and the subscriber does have the freedom to see specialists without needing a referral. However, if the policy subscriber chooses to go out of the network for health care coverage, the PPO will not cover such visits or will only partially pay and the subscriber will need to pay out of their own pocket.
Florida Point-of-Service (POS) Health Insurance
Point-of-Service (POS) health insurance is a lot like a PPO, in that you the subscriber need to stay within the network of physicians and health care providers. However, there is an additional layer of complexity, in that you have less freedom: you cannot see a specialist on your own. Instead, you need to work through what is known as a Primary Care Physician (PCP), who will determine when you need a referral and who you will be referred to see. One of the plusses of a POS health insurance policy is that it tends to be lower in costs. Also, many times preventative health care like smoking cessation is emphasized.
Florida Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Health Insurance
A Health Maintenance Organization most often referred to by the acronym HMO health care plan tends to have low premiums as well as low co-pays or no co-pays. However, you are limited to only seeing the health care providers within the organization. Additionally, you the subscriber will have a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who will act as a gatekeeper: they will be the ones who need to approve a referral in order to see a specialist. Some HMOs won’t even provide coverage / reimbursement if you end-up at an emergency room outside of their organization. On the plus side, in addition to being very affordable, HMOs place a lot of emphasis on preventative care and health improvement.
